Treat yourself
Treat Yourself (2019) focuses on gesture, ritual, pursuit of beauty, decay, and identity. I have a complex relationship with my own body and I’m interested in exploring this through photograms, which have been created by using different objects used in beauty treatments. What you see are marks and shadows left by lashes, nails, breast implants, serums, fluids. They are like x-rays, ghosts of dreams and desires. What I find troublesome is that beauty treatments and products are marketed treats. We are taught that beauty brings light, warmth and love. Beauty advertising tries to capitalise on people’s internalised insecurities, this need to feel seen and accepted. This project is an investigation of how those isolated, floating, fleeting pieces of self are sewn together, of the different ways the feeling of not belonging is hidden and supressed, blended and faded out.
